Orange Prize 2010

The shortlist for the 2010 Orange Prize for Fiction is out. This is the women-only prize, awarded to a book published in English in the UK. The women-only requirement usually means inevitable whingeing and grumbling in the British press: "What about the shockingly ignored male writers like poor old Ian McEwan?" They'll be okay. Even that oh-so-trusty source, Wikipedia, had a slanted description of the prize recently - which I was happy to edit extensively!

Shortlist this year looks like an epic battle between the well-reviewed A Gate at the Stairs or The Lacuna vs the Booker-winning Wolf Hall. Winner will be announced June 9th. Here's the list:

Rosie Alison for The Very Thought of You

Barbara Kingsolver for The Lacuna

Attica Locke for Black Water Rising

Hilary Mantel for Wolf Hall

Lorrie Moore for A Gate at the Stairs

Monique Roffey for The White Woman on the Green Bicycle
